Prominent ear deformity mostly occurs due to genetic reasons. Rarely, our patients think that it is caused by the curling of their ears and lying on them in their infancy, but essentially the genetic factor is also essential for them. Especially in primary school and adolescence, this situation causes very serious problems. The resulting psychological trauma negatively affects school success and socialization of the individual. The best way to prevent these problems is to eliminate the problem as soon as possible.
How is the surgery done?
Classical technique otoplasty surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The only exceptions are younger patients and those who think they cannot tolerate local anesthesia. Except for these two exceptions, it can be easily performed with local anesthesia. During the surgery, local anesthesia is applied behind the ear.
Otoplasty surgery with the classical technique takes 1 hour. During the surgery, the incision is made behind the ear. The cartilages are shaped visually and with high quality suture materials, they are kept in the correct position in terms of aesthetics. Thanks to the refined and different techniques applied during otoplasty surgery, the ear folds have a natural shape to the extent of perfection. The incision behind the ear is closed with self-melting suture materials in the form of aesthetic hidden sutures. Therefore, there is no need to remove stitches after the surgery.
Is Otoplasty Surgery a Risky Surgery?
The degree of risk in ear aesthetic surgeries is very, very low. However, as with any surgery, there are potential risk factors after otoplasty surgery. Infection, bleeding and hematoma are the first potential risks that come to mind. Although we have not faced these problems until now, we also explain the risks of the surgery to our patients as a principle.
How Permanent Is the Surgery? Is There a Risk of Deterioration?
Classical technique otoplasty is a very reliable operation. However, in terms of general information, it is necessary to clarify the relapse or deterioration situation. Tiny openings such as 2mm or 3mm can be 1-2%. In some patients, even this does not pose a problem, but a minor revision can be planned for this rarely occurring condition.
When is Prominent Ear Surgery Appropriate?
The development of the auricle is completed quite early at the age of 6 years. Therefore, this surgery can be performed at any age, starting from the age of 6 years. Performing the surgery in the pre-school period has a significant benefit, especially in the form of preventing possible traumas that the patient may receive from a psychological point of view. Sometimes patients have the wrong idea that "I didn't have this surgery at the age of 6, I can't be any more". Our recommendation, and of course, the best way is to perform this surgery in the pre-school period. However, if it is not done, they can have this surgery at any time of their life, that is, at any age.
Is There Any Pain After Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?
Although the probability of pain or minimal pain after otoplasty surgery varies according to the surgical interventions to be performed in the surgery, there will be no pain at all, and it may only be in the form of mild pain on the first day. We routinely prescribe antibiotics and painkillers to our patients after otoplasty, which significantly increases my patients' post-operative comfort.
When will I return to normal life?
There is minimal difference in male and female patients returning to normal life (social or business life). Since the hair band is also used as an accessory for women, female patients continue their normal lives immediately after the operation as if nothing had happened. Men, on the other hand, may experience minimal social problems since they do not use hair bands much, but if we compare them with the classical bandage application, they have always expressed to me that they are very satisfied with their condition.
Will there be any scars after prominent ear surgery?
When the hair band is removed and the first dressing is made, you will see your ears edematous and red. Don't let this scare you. Payments will pass within 5-7 days on average. The redness will not even attract attention in the society. You will be aware of this redness as you know that you have had surgery.
My patients ask the question of whether there will be a scar behind the ear. We can answer this question with a clear no. We both hide the incision behind the ear and prevent this possible problem by closing it with aesthetic hidden stitches.
